Our Mission
To provide a free, simple, and effective platform where honesty meets technology. We believe in the kindness of strangers and the power of community to make "lost" just a temporary status.
Our Origin Story
It started beneath the surface. As avid SCUBA divers frequenting a popular local lake, my dive buddy and I often found ourselves acting as underwater treasure hunters—but the "treasure" was usually lost Apple Watches. While we managed to return some devices using their emergency contact info, far too many remained unclaimed with no way to trace their owners. We realized the need for a dedicated space where finders could easily connect with those who had lost their devices. Resurfaced was born from that simple idea: using community and technology to turn "lost at sea" into "welcome home".
Essential Tips for Apple Watch Owners
The "Sport Band" Warning
As divers, the vast majority of watches we recover are found with the standard silicone "pin-and-tuck" sport band unclasped. These bands are comfortable for daily use but notorious for popping open upon impact with water (like jumping off a dock or boat).
Recommendation: If you are active in the water, switch to a secure band with a mechanical buckle (like the Ocean Band) or a continuous loop (like the Solo Loop) to ensure your device stays attached to you.
Your Return Ticket: Medical ID
A locked Apple Watch is a brick to a finder unless you have Medical ID enabled. This allows a finder to hold the side button and see your "Emergency Contacts" without unlocking the device. It is the #1 way we return watches.
- Open Health app on iPhone.
- Tap your profile picture > Medical ID.
- Tap Edit and add an emergency contact.
- Ensure "Show When Locked" is turned ON.
How to Find Your Serial Number (If Lost)
If you no longer have the watch, you can still find the serial number needed to file a report here.
Method 1: Using your iPhone
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap your Name/Apple ID at the top.
- Scroll down to your list of devices.
- Tap your Apple Watch to see the Serial Number.
Method 2: Original Packaging
If you still have the box your watch came in, the serial number is printed on the barcode label on the outside of the box.
Method 3: Original Receipt
Your original purchase receipt or invoice (from Apple or other retailers) will almost always list the device's serial number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Resurfaced free to use?
Yes, Resurfaced is completely free. Our platform is built on the belief in the kindness of strangers helping one another. While we do not charge for our services, we gratefully accept donations to help cover hosting and maintenance costs to keep this community resource running.
Can I offer a reward?
Absolutely. We fully support owners who wish to offer a reward as a gesture of gratitude to the finder for doing the right thing. However, this is not required, and any reward arrangement is strictly between you and the finder.
Safety & Policy on Extortion
Resurfaced connects people based on trust and goodwill. We are a platform for connection and cannot be held liable for the actions of individual users. However, we have a zero-tolerance policy for extortion or holding items for ransom. If you encounter such behavior, please report it to us immediately so we can investigate and ban the offending account. Always exercise caution and meet in safe, public locations when exchanging items.
How does the matching work?
We use the unique Serial Number of the Apple Watch to match lost reports with found reports. When a "Found" report is submitted with the same serial number as a "Lost" report, we alert the users.
Is my personal information visible to everyone?
Your email address is private and only shared securely with a confirmed match. Note: Locations on the public map are visible to everyone, so we recommend using a general area (like a cross-street) rather than your exact home address when reporting.
What if I don't know my Serial Number?
If you've lost your watch, you can find the serial number on your iPhone in the Settings app or on the original box. See the "Essential Tips" section above for detailed instructions.
